It’s not easy to convert DARPA’s fabled principles into world-changing successes.
Business Insider’s Rob Price is reporting on the end of Building 8-a much-ballyhooed skunkworks within Facebook dedicated to wildly daring equipment experiment. Its Portal videophone is now a commercial campaign, and a recent reorg has shuffled its other projects elsewhere at Facebook. As Facebook VP for AR and VR Andrew Bosworth pointed out to me on Twitter, the switch is more about the completion of its Building 8 branding than Facebook drawing back on bleeding-edge experiment. Still, it feels like a conspicuous moment in a six-year-long adventure that encompasses both Facebook and Google.
