Artificial intelligence should get the same ethical protections as animals

It might be a long time before we create an AI that can explain its feelings to us. But we could create ones as advanced as swine much sooner. How will we treat them?
Universities across the world are conducting major experiment on neural networks, as are organizations such as the Allen Institute, and tech corporations including Google and Facebook. A likely ensue is that we will soon have AI nearly as cognitively advanced as mouse or hounds. Now is the time to start thinking about whether, and under what plights, these AIs might deserve the ethical armours we typically give to animals.
